Bamboo for yarn that slides (silk, bamboo, superwash merino), for cold or tired hands, and for a first circular, because the stitches stay where you put them. Steel when you want speed on grippy wool and a slicker tip for lace. Both come in the same lengths and sizes, so you can mix them project to project.

Is 24 inch long enough for an adult sweater?

For a small adult, yes. Anything over about 36 inches around is more comfortable on the 32 inch, where the stitches have room to spread.

Which size do I need?

The pattern tells you, and when it gives both, knit to the mm figure. Choosing without one: US 1 to 3 for fingering and sock yarn, US 4 to 6 for sport and DK, US 7 to 9 for worsted, US 10 to 11 for bulky, US 13 to 15 for super bulky.
