Frequently Asked Questions
A rigid heddle loom uses a single heddle and is wonderful for plain weave and simpler patterns, which makes it a very approachable starting point. A table loom adds multiple shafts controlled by levers, typically four, eight, or sixteen, so you can weave twills, lace, and far more intricate structures. If you've enjoyed your rigid heddle and you're itching for more design possibilities, a rigid heddle table loom or a true multi-shaft table loom is the natural next step.
For most newer weavers, a 4 shaft table loom covers an enormous range of patterns and is plenty to learn on, which is why it's our most popular recommendation for beginners and intermediates. If you already know you want complex twills, lace, or layered structures, an 8 shaft model gives you more room to explore, and 16 shafts are aimed at advanced artists doing very intricate work. A good rule of thumb is to buy slightly more capability than you need today so you don't outgrow the loom too quickly.
It can be a great choice, especially if you're motivated and drawn to patterned weaving rather than just plain weave, since the lever system is intuitive and forgiving. Some people prefer to start on a rigid heddle and graduate to a table loom, while others jump straight to a 4 shaft table loom and never look back. If you're unsure, tell us about the projects you're dreaming of and we'll help you decide whether to start here or build up to it.
There's no single best brand, but Ashford, Schacht, and Louët consistently earn weavers' trust for durability, smooth shed changes, and smart design, so you can't really go wrong among them. Ashford table looms are popular for their value and the availability of accessories like a matching stand, Schacht table looms are loved for their refined build, and LeClerc has a long, respected heritage. The right pick often comes down to weaving width, shaft count, and feel, which is exactly the kind of thing our team is happy to talk through with you.
You can absolutely set a table loom on any sturdy weaving table at a comfortable height, and plenty of weavers do exactly that. That said, a dedicated stand, such as the Ashford table loom stand, raises the loom to an ergonomic position, keeps it stable, and frees up your everyday table, which makes a real difference during long sessions. If you weave often or struggle with back and shoulder strain, a matching stand is well worth considering.
