Ashland Bay Merino Tussah Silk 80/20 Ecru This fiber is a luxurious marriage of soft, elastic merino and strong, lustrous tussah silk. 21.5 micron/ 3-5 inch staple length.
Merino is arguably the most commonly used animal fiber, used in everything from delicate socks to durable athletic uniforms. It is extremely absorbent and maintains its warmth when wet, making it excellent for socks or next-to-skin articles that absorb and wick moisture. Merino has a high warmth to weight ratio, meaning that it is very warm while remaining lightweight.
Silk is the ultimate in luxury. It is an all-climate fabric, cool in the summer and cozy and warm in the winter. It is hypoallergenic, so coupled with merino, this blend is a great choice for individuals with wool sensitivities. Like merino, silk is highly absorbent and dries quickly. Its smooth surface resists soil and odors well, and natural amino acids help moisturize and aid the skin in healing.
Dyeing a merino/silk blend will create subtle variations because the fibers take up the dye a bit differently, creating an interesting tonal and lustrous product. Looking for inspiration? Check out our line of Ashland Bay Dyed Merino/ Tussah Silk Blends.
Paired together, merino and silk each bring their own natural qualities to create a fiber blend with superior softness and strength. Try this fiber and you'll see why it's one of the most popular blends here at the shop!
