HiyaHiya bamboo double points come five to a pack in three lengths, so you can match the needle to the job: 5 inch for socks and mittens where you want the least needle in your hand, 6 inch for socks, mittens and hat crowns as the all-round length, and 8 inch for hats, sleeves and anything in bulky yarn. If you're buying your first set, take the 6 inch in your sock size.

HiyaHiya's bamboo is infused with resin, so it won't splinter or warp, and the needle stays light and warm in the hand. The surface has just enough grip that silk, bamboo and superwash yarns stay put when you set the work down, and it's the needle to reach for if steel makes your hands ache or cold.

Which length

Length What it fits
5 inch Socks, mittens, glove fingers, baby things. The shortest needle in the hand.
6 inch Socks, mittens, hat crowns. The default.
8 inch Hats, sleeves, cowls in the round, bulky yarn. Room for more stitches per needle.

Five needles means you can hold the stitches on four and knit with the fifth, or work on three and knit with the fourth with one spare. Not sure? Call or chat and someone who knits on these will tell you which one.

Goes with

The bamboo flyers are the same jobs with a bend in the middle, three needles instead of five and two changes a round instead of four, which is what takes the ladder out of stranded colourwork. For a hat body or a sleeve, the 16 inch bamboo circular in the same size gets you to the crown, and these finish it. Every HiyaHiya steel, sharp and bamboo needle is in the HiyaHiya collection.

We carry every HiyaHiya length and size, and the people who answer the phone knit on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Four needles or five?

Either. Four holds the round on three needles and knits with the fourth, which is fewer joins to keep even. Five holds it on four and knits with the fifth, which some knitters find steadier and which keeps a spare in the pack. The pack gives you both.

Bamboo or steel double points?

Bamboo grips, so the resting needles stay in the stitches instead of sliding out. Steel is faster on grippy wool and takes a finer point for lace. Same sizes in both, so mix them by project.

Which size do I need?

The pattern tells you, and when it gives both, knit to the mm figure. Choosing without one: US 1 to 3 for fingering and sock yarn, US 4 to 6 for sport and DK, US 7 to 9 for worsted, US 10 to 11 for bulky, US 13 to 15 for super bulky.

Which length for socks?

5 or 6 inch. A sock is about 8 inches around, so 16 to 20 stitches sit on each needle and a 5 inch holds them with the least needle waving about. Go 6 inch if you like a little more to hold, and 8 inch if you're knitting a sock in bulky yarn.
