Walnut Heddles for the Kromski Harp Forte Rigid Heddle Loom. The matching Walnut loom and Walnut 2nd Heddle Block Set are also available.

Heddles come in a variety of sizes called dents, which control the number of ends per inch in your project. The standard heddle included with each Kromski loom is 8-dent. Also available are 5, 8, 10, and 12-dent heddles. As you expand your weaving interests, you may want to have more than one heddle size.

Note: 32" heddles do not have the top frame shaped as an arch.

You may also want to try using 2 heddles of the same dent size at the same time. This allows you to approximate a 4-harness loom by giving you independent control over two sets of warp threads. You can also use two heddles to double the width of your finished fabric. Neither approach is as straightforward as a dedicated loom setup, but both are useful options. The Harp Forte includes a double heddle block, so no additional accessories are needed to get started.

It is important to consider dent size before choosing a warp yarn. As the dent size number increases (5 to 8 to 10 to 12), your warp material must decrease in thickness. All rigid heddles are composed of slots and holes, and your warp threads must pass through them without resistance. As you raise and lower the heddle, threads in the slots must slip freely. As you beat your project, the heddle must slide forward and back without causing yarn to bunch up. Your rigid heddle needs to move easily in all directions.

With experience you may be able to judge whether a dent size suits your yarn just by looking at it, but early on there is a chance you will misjudge. If in doubt, create a short sample warp about 2 inches wide and thread it through your heddle to test how it performs. You can also adjust by substituting a slightly different material for the warp. Some materials will not work as a rigid heddle warp, but may still be suitable for weft.
