Join us for a fun, hands-on introduction to the art of natural dyeing! In this class you’ll explore how to create reds, yellows, and greens using dyes derived from nature. You’ll learn the basics of working with madder root, mushrooms, and gardenia pods, and leave with your very own naturally dyed yarn, plus the knowledge to continue experimenting at home.  With this experience, you’ll be ready to take the next step in your natural dye journey and join our upcoming Indigo Dyeing class!

Class dates and times: 
  • Saturday, February 21st, from 1-3pm

Supplies Included: 

  • All natural dye supplies including plants and mordants
  • Personal protection equipment
Supplies needed:
  • Please bring 1–3 skeins of undyed yarn (wool, cotton, linen, silk, ramie, cashmere, angora, or alpaca).

    To take home yarn in all three colors, you may either:
    • Purchase three full skeins, or
    • Purchase one skein and have it wound into three mini skeins.

    We carry a great selection of undyed yarn in store and are happy to help you choose the perfect base.

What you will learn:
  • Plants and what colors you can create with them
  • PH Scale and how it effects color
  • Maintaining temperature
  • Common fibers used in dyeing
  • Mordants and how they work with natural pigments and fibers

Instructor Name: Justin Bullard

Instructor Bio: 

Justin Bullard an RN, urban alchemist and ethnobotanist, with undergraduate and masters degrees in medical ethnobotany that included extensive travels and field work in Nepal. He has also studied indigo dyeing and sericulture in Japan.
 

     

When he’s not registered nursing he’s an accomplished craftsman in the fiber arts, silver smithing, and has an all-natural soap line of  "Urban Alchemist” soaps among other natural products. 
 

From Justin's Bio: "I've been studying herbal medicine from the age of 13, and was raised using medicinal plants at home. I have formally studied ethnomedicine, phytochemistry, nutrition, microbiology, botany, medical anthropology. And had the privilege of studying with Carol Hendrickson, Lucia Cargill, Roy Ellen, Nadia Lovell, Laura Rival and Bryan Whitehead.”

A standard pair of socks usually takes 100g of fingering weight, while a hat takes about 100g of worsted.For Spinning Fiber, a standard 4oz braid will generally make a pair of socks or a hat.
