Indigo refers to the plant,Ā Indigofera tinctoria, and the blue pigment obtained from any number of the approximately 25 species of plants that produce the pigment, indigotin (mostly from the pea family).Ā Indigofera tinctoriaĀ andĀ Indigofera suffruticosaĀ contain the highest percentage of the pigment, with woad and Japanese indigo at about 5%.Ā

This workshop is an introduction to natural indigo dyeing for folks who may have never used plant dyes or indigo and or who would like more hands-on experience using indigo for dyeing yarn or fabric and to learn basic shibori techniques to obtain certain patterns for those who want to explore this manual resist technique.
