Frequently Asked Questions
Yarn weight refers to how thick or thin a yarn is, and it directly affects the size of your needles or hook, your stitch gauge, and the look and feel of your finished fabric. Most patterns will specify a recommended yarn weight, so if you are following a pattern, that is your starting point. If you are designing your own project, think about what the finished item needs to do - chunky and bulky weights are great for cozy blankets and outerwear, while fingering and sport weights are better for socks, shawls, and lighter garments. Our team is always happy to help you match the right yarn to your specific project.
It matters quite a bit depending on what you are making and who it is for. Natural fibers like wool, alpaca, cotton, and silk have properties that synthetics simply cannot replicate - wool regulates temperature and has natural elasticity, alpaca is incredibly soft and warm, cotton breathes well and is great for summer projects. Acrylic yarns are more affordable, machine washable, and very durable, making them a practical choice for items that will need frequent washing, like children's toys or everyday blankets. We carry both, but our passion is for high quality natural fibers sourced from farms and producers we trust.
A general rule of thumb for a basic adult pullover sweater is around 1,000 to 2,000 yards depending on the yarn weight and the size of the garment - lighter weight yarns in larger sizes will need more yardage, while chunky yarns in smaller sizes need less. A throw blanket typically requires 1,500 to 3,000 yards. A hat uses around 100 to 200 yards and a pair of socks around 350 to 400 yards per pair in fingering weight. When in doubt, buy a little extra - dye lots can vary between batches, and leftover yarn never goes to waste.
Many of our customers have sensitive skin, and we stock plenty of options for them. Superwash merino, alpaca, cotton, bamboo, and plant based fiber yarns are all popular choices for people who react to standard wool. If you have a known lanolin sensitivity, plant fibers or synthetic blends are typically the safest route. If you are knitting for a baby or someone with very reactive skin, we recommend reaching out through our chat so we can point you toward the softest, most hypoallergenic options in our current stock. We know our inventory well and we are glad to help you navigate it.
The difference is significant. Big box craft stores carry mass produced, commercially spun yarns that prioritize cost and shelf life over quality or fiber integrity. The yarns we carry are small batch, carefully sourced, and selected by people who actually spin, knit, weave, and crochet. We work with independent dyers, family run mills, and respected international brands that have earned their reputation over decades. You will find fiber types at Paradise Fibers - like hand dyed merino, qiviut, yak, and small batch single breed wools - that you simply cannot get at a chain craft store.
Yarn stores best in a cool, dry, and dark environment away from direct sunlight, which can fade dyed fibers over time. Natural fibers like wool and alpaca should be stored with cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths - never mothballs, which can damage fiber and leave a harsh chemical smell. Keep yarn in breathable bags or bins rather than sealed plastic, which can trap moisture. Avoid storing yarn in high humidity areas like basements or bathrooms. If you are storing yarn for a long period, check it periodically to make sure no pests have found their way in.
