About Kromski Scotch Tension Spinning Wheels
The Kromski scotch tension lineup includes four distinct wheels, each designed around a single drive system with a scotch tension brake band. These are the wheels Kromski recommends for spinners who want a simpler, more intuitive setup, a more portable wheel, or a modern design with a removable flyer. Every Kromski scotch tension wheel is made from European alder and birch, available in four finishes (unfinished, finished clear, mahogany, and walnut), and uses the same standard Kromski bobbins as the rest of the lineup, so bobbins are backwards compatible if you add another Kromski wheel later.
How Scotch Tension Works on a Kromski Spinning Wheel
Scotch tension is a single drive system where one drive band turns the flyer, and a separate small brake band sits over the bobbin whorl and is held in place by a spring and tension knob. When you treadle, the flyer spins freely while the brake slows the bobbin just enough to draw yarn onto it. Turning the tension knob tightens or loosens the brake, which increases or decreases how hard the wheel pulls your yarn in. It is a mechanical setup that rewards small, responsive adjustments and gives spinners direct control over take-up at the turn of a knob.
Benefits of a Kromski Scotch Tension Wheel
Scotch tension is often the recommended setup for anyone learning to spin, and Kromski's single drive lineup is especially friendly for new spinners. One knob controls take-up, so there is less to manage while your hands are focused on drafting. The tension is finely responsive, so it is easy to dial in just the right pull for fine singles, medium yarns, or plump textured yarns. Kromski scotch tension wheels also tend to be more portable and more affordable than the double drive Saxony wheels in the lineup, which makes them popular for travel, classes, and first wheels. And because Kromski uses generously sized bobbins at 4.2 ounces, you'll spend less time stopping to change bobbins mid-session.
Kromski Scotch Tension vs Double Drive Wheels
Kromski makes both scotch tension and double drive wheels. The double drive lineup (Minstrel, Symphony, Polonaise) gives you dual-system flexibility, since every Kromski double drive wheel can also be set up as scotch tension. The scotch tension lineup (Sonata, Prelude, Interlude, Fantasia) is built around a single drive system only, which keeps the wheel simpler, often lighter, and typically more affordable. If you already know you prefer scotch tension, or if portability and price matter more than having both systems, the scotch tension lineup is the right fit. If you want to try both systems in one wheel, look at the Kromski double drive collection instead.
Choosing Your Finish
Every Kromski scotch tension wheel is offered in four finishes. Unfinished natural lets you apply your own stain, oil, or wax. Finished clear protects the wood while keeping the natural alder tone. Mahogany adds a rich warm red-brown color. Walnut is the darkest finish, producing a deep chocolate-toned wheel with dramatic grain. Alder is a naturally variable wood, so minor color variation and darker flecks are normal and part of the character.
Kromski Sonata, Prelude, Interlude, and Fantasia Compared
Each of the four Kromski scotch tension wheels has its own personality. Here is how they compare.
Kromski Sonata. A full-size folding travel wheel with a 19 inch drive wheel, double treadle, and a custom padded carry bag included. The Sonata folds into a compact 22 by 19 inch package, making it ideal for guild meetings, festivals, retreats, and spinners with limited home storage. Scotch tension, ball bearings on the wheel crank, three bobbins, and optional Jumbo or Faster Flyer kits available.
Kromski Prelude. The most compact Saxony-style wheel in the Kromski lineup. With an 18 inch wheel and the classic antique silhouette Kromski is known for, the Prelude is often chosen as a first wheel. It swivels at the mother-of-all for a more compact footprint when moving or storing the wheel. Scotch tension, three ratios (6, 10.5, 13:1), and excellent treadling for its size.
Kromski Interlude. The mid-size Saxony, falling between the Prelude and the Symphony at 21.5 inches. The Interlude gives you a larger drive wheel, higher ratio options (7, 13.5, and beyond with accessory flyers), and traditional Saxony styling without the full footprint of the 24 inch wheels. A great pick if you want the classic look with a bit more momentum than the Prelude.
Kromski Fantasia. Kromski's modern design and the newest scotch tension wheel in the lineup. The Fantasia features a unique removable flyer that pulls off the front of the maiden post, so you can change bobbins in seconds without messing with the drive band. It also uses a changeable whorl system for different ratios, sliding hooks on the flyer, and sealed ball bearings on both the flyer and drive wheel for exceptionally smooth spinning. The curved weighted wheel accent gives it a distinctive modern profile.
Accessories That Work Across the Kromski Scotch Tension Lineup
The Sonata, Prelude, and Interlude share a Faster Flyer and a Jumbo Flyer, so if you own more than one of these wheels, you only need to buy the accessory flyer once plus a matching front maiden for each wheel. Standard Kromski bobbins fit every wheel in the lineup. Replacement drive bands, brake band sets, tension springs, maidens, and lazy kates are widely stocked, so your wheel is easy to maintain over the long haul. Note that the Fantasia uses a different, dedicated flyer system because of its removable design, so the Faster and Jumbo flyers for the Sonata/Prelude/Interlude do not interchange with it.
Choosing the Right Kromski Scotch Tension Wheel for You
If you travel, teach classes, or need a wheel that folds, choose the Sonata. If you want the most compact and affordable traditional Saxony, choose the Prelude. If you want a Saxony wheel with more momentum and ratio range than the Prelude but a smaller footprint than the Symphony, choose the Interlude. If you want a modern design with quick-change bobbins and the smoothest bearings in the lineup, choose the Fantasia.
