Araucania Huasco Sock Twilight Paints is a hand-painted, superwash fingering-weight sock yarn from Araucania Yarns. Each 100 g hank holds 433 yards of four-ply 75% wool and 25% polyamide, which is the classic sock-yarn blend: the wool gives warmth and spring, and the nylon adds the abrasion resistance that keeps heels and toes from wearing through.

The Twilight Paints palette is named after butterflies, from Swallowtail and Purple Emperor to Monarch, Painted Lady and Blue Morpho. Colors are layered by hand, so every hank carries soft shifts of tone rather than a flat solid, the way a dusk sky moves from one shade into the next.

What to make with it

Socks first: one hank knits a standard pair of adult socks. It is just as good in shawls, cowls, baby knits and lightweight sweaters, anywhere you want a washable fingering weight with painterly color. Ready-made project kits using this yarn include the Esta Cowl or Hood Kit, the Jenna Scarf Kit and the Elda Pullover Kit. For a bolder patterned look, see Huasco Sock Zig Zag, or browse all sock yarns.

Questions about Huasco Sock Twilight Paints

How many skeins do I need for a pair of socks?

One 433-yard hank knits a standard pair of adult socks. Very tall socks, large men's sizes or knee-highs may need a second hank.

Is Huasco Sock machine washable?

Yes. It is superwash wool, so you can machine wash it cold (up to 30°C). Do not bleach or dry clean it.

How do I keep hand-painted colors from pooling?

For anything wider than a sock, such as a sweater body or a wide shawl, work from two hanks at once and alternate every two rows. That blends the color evenly across the piece.

Is the wool mulesing free?

Yes. Araucania states the wool in Huasco Sock is mulesing free and carries the Sheep Welfare Green Tag Tally.
