Fil Piuma from Concept by Katia is a 100% natural "feather" yarn of 69% superfine alpaca and 31% merino wool. Its airy, brushed structure gives light volume and a soft halo, so it knits into warm garments that weigh almost nothing. Piuma is Italian for feather.

Each 100 g ball holds 240 yards (220 m). That is a lot of yarn for a bulky-needle yarn, which is the point: the feather construction traps air, so you get bulky-gauge warmth with far less weight. Katia designs a full coat from about four balls.

Questions about Fil Piuma

What is Fil Piuma made of?

69% superfine alpaca and 31% merino wool. It is 100% natural fiber, with no synthetic binder.

Why does a bulky yarn have 240 yards per ball?

Fil Piuma is a feather construction: the fibers are held in an airy, brushed structure rather than tightly spun. It knits at bulky needle sizes but is very light for its volume, so each 100 g ball goes a long way.

How many balls do I need?

A scarf takes one to two balls. Katia designs a long-sleeved coat from about four balls.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash and lay flat to dry. Do not bleach or tumble dry. It can also be dry cleaned.
