Fiber Content: 70% Superwash Merino Wool 30% Nylon

The fiber that made armies march. Now machine washable.

Roman soldiers wore felted wool foot-wraps called udones and reckoned the empire's reach by them. The first knitted socks came out of fourth-century Egypt, dyed red, with a separate compartment for the big toe. By the time of Napoleon, half the campaigns of Europe were lost or won on the question of whether the men's wool held together at the heel. Wool kept them warm. Wool kept them dry. Wool also disintegrated at exactly the wrong moment.

Then nylon arrived. May 15, 1940. American women bought nearly four million pairs of nylon stockings in the first four days. Within five years, the same fiber was holding parachutes together and reinforcing the toes of GI socks across two oceans.

This blend is the direct descendant of that marriage.

Seventy percent superwash merino. Thirty percent nylon.

Combed top, undyed, ready for the wheel and the dye pot.

The merino is what gives the yarn its bloom. The elastic crimp that springs the cuff back into shape every time you peel them off. The quiet warmth, the moisture management that wool quietly perfected ten thousand years before performance fabrics had a marketing department.

The nylon is what keeps the toe of your sock alive past month three.

The "superwash" part is chemistry. In the early 1970s, textile engineers figured out how to coat each individual wool scale with a microscopically thin polymer so the scales could no longer lock onto each other and felt. The result is a wool that survives a normal wash cycle without panic. No more hand-washing the socks you spent twenty hours making.

The specs, read as character.

  • Composition: 70% Superwash Merino / 30% Nylon. The 30% nylon is more than most sock yarns carry. It earns its keep at the heel.
  • Preparation: Combed top. Undyed. A blank canvas with serious bones.
  • Premium designation: Blended four times for consistent fiber distribution throughout the top. Spinners notice this immediately, and dyers notice it again the moment the color hits.
  • Color: Off-white. Takes acid dyes with vigor. Speckles, kettle-dyes, gradients, and ombres all welcome.

At the wheel and at the dye pot.

Spin it worsted from the end for definition and durability. The kind of crisp, round single that holds stitch definition through six pattern repeats and ten washings. A two-ply at fingering weight is the classic sock construction. A three-ply will outlive your sock drawer.

For dyers: the merino takes color brilliantly while the nylon stays mostly white. The finished yarn ends up with a heathered quality that hand-dyers know how to use and machine-dyers cannot reproduce. Speckle it. Variegate it. Make a self-striping. Send it through a slow cooker with three jars of acid dye and an opinion.

For.

Socks, obviously. Mittens. Gloves. The fingerless wristers your spouse keeps stealing. Anything that lives at the working end of a body and needs to come out of the laundry intact.

There are fibers you spin to be admired in a glass case. There are fibers you spin to be worn out, washed, worn out again, and finally retired, decades later, to the rag basket with full honors.

This is the second kind.
