Choosing a blue

Most blue yarn falls into three groups. Navy and indigo are the workhorse darks for sweaters and menswear. Mid blues like denim, cornflower, and cobalt are the ones people pick for a first sweater because they are easy to wear. Light and bright blues (sky, aqua, turquoise, teal) are where you get into baby things, summer knits, and colorwork accents.

Heathered blues, like the Cascade 220 heathers, have flecks of other colors spun in. They hide small tension changes well and look richer in plain stockinette than a flat solid does.

Blue yarns worth knowing

Navy is harder to knit than it looks

Very dark blues are almost as hard to see stitches in as black. Knit under a good light, use needles in a contrasting color, and put a light cloth on your lap. Your eyes will thank you on the cable rows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teal is a darker blue green with some grey in it. Turquoise is lighter and brighter, closer to the color of the stone. On this page both show up because they sit on the blue side, and the greener teals also appear on our green yarn page.

A mid blue worsted wool like Cascade 220 in a heathered shade is hard to beat. It is affordable, widely used in patterns, easy to see your stitches in, and forgiving of uneven tension.

Good quality wool dyed with acid dyes holds navy well. Most fading comes from washing in hot water or drying in direct sun. Wash in cool water with a wool wash and dry flat out of the sun.
