About Round Mountain Fibers Alder Fingering
Round Mountain Fibers is a boutique fiber arts studio based in Vermont, specializing in colorways inspired by the natural world. Each skein is hand dyed in small batches, with new colorways added regularly, typically 3 to 5 new colors every month, drawing from birds, insects, plants, minerals, and creatures from land and sea.
The Yarn Base
Alder Fingering is Round Mountain's signature sock weight base, an 80/20 blend of Superwash Merino and Nylon. The merino is sourced from New Zealand and Australia and spun in Canada into an 8-ply construction. The result is a yarn that is exceptionally soft against the skin, while the nylon content adds the durability needed for high-wear projects like socks, mittens, and gloves.
The superwash treatment makes it machine washable, which also makes it an excellent choice for gift knitting. The 8-ply construction gives it slightly more body and stitch definition than many comparable sock yarns, making colorwork and textured stitches read cleanly.
One note from Round Mountain directly: color may appear slightly muted on this base compared to higher-sheen yarns, which is part of what gives Alder Fingering its distinctively natural, earthy quality.
