Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Tweed is a four-ply Aran-weight yarn spun from the same Peruvian Highland fleece as the original Woolstok, then flecked with Donegal tweed. It is soft and lofty with a rustic character that reads as depth rather than noise, so cables, textured stitches and plain stockinette all hold up under it.

Each 100 g hank is about 109 yards (100 meters) of 85% fine highland wool and 15% Donegal. It works on US 9-11 (5.5-8 mm) needles at 3-5 stitches per inch, which puts a hat or a pair of mitts inside an evening or two.

What to make with it

Cabled hats, mittens, cowls, blankets and quick outerwear sweaters. The tweed flecks give colorwork and textured patterns a heathered, old-world look. For the smooth, non-tweed version in a lighter weight, see Woolstok Worsted, or browse all Blue Sky Fibers yarns and other Aran weight yarns.

Questions about Woolstok Tweed

Is Woolstok Tweed aran or bulky?

It is labeled Aran weight, but at 109 yards per 100 g it behaves more like a bulky. Check the yardage and swatch before you substitute it into an Aran pattern.

Is it superwash?

No. It is untreated wool and it felts readily, so hand wash it gently or have it dry cleaned. That also makes it a good choice for intentionally felted projects.

What is Donegal tweed?

Donegal is the traditional Irish tweed effect: small contrasting flecks, or neps, of color spun into the yarn. In Woolstok Tweed they make up 15% of the blend and give each shade its speckled depth.

How many hanks do I need for a hat?

Most adult hats take one to two hanks depending on size, brim depth and how much cabling the pattern has.
