First Raglan Sweater Workshop: Flax by Tin Can Knits 

Learn to knit a seamless top-down raglan sweater in this relaxed, homework-based workshop using the popular Flax pattern from Tin Can Knits. This class is designed for advanced beginner knitters who are comfortable knitting and purling in the round and are ready to build sweater skills.


This workshop is structured as a guided knit-along. Students will knit extensively between classes in order to stay on track. Class time will focus on demonstrations, troubleshooting, fit, and skill-building.

 

Dates/Times:  10/16, 10/30, 11/13 from 3-5pm

 

Recommended sizes:
0–6 mo, 6–12 mo, 1–2 yrs, or 2–4 yrs


Students should already know how to:
• Knit and purl
• Cast on and bind off
• Knit in the round on circular needles

Students will learn about:

• Top-down sweater construction
• Raglan increases
• Reading sweater patterns and stitch counts
• Sleeve separation and underarm construction
• Knitting sleeves in the round
• Ribbing, finishing, and blocking techniques

 

Supplies needed:

• Printed Flax sweater pattern by Tin Can Knits
• Worsted weight yarn (consider superwash for easy laundering)
• US 6 (4mm) circular needle
• US 8 (5mm) circular needle
• DPNs or long circular needle for magic loop sleeves
• Stitch markers
• Waste yarn or stitch holders
• Tapestry needle
• Measuring tape
• Row counter (optional but helpful)

Suggested Yarns:

• Berroco Vintage

• Cascade 220 Superwash

• Malabrigo Rios
Please avoid black or dark yarn colors.

Homework Between Classes:
Students should expect to knit several hours between sessions to remain on schedule.
Homework will include completing portions of the yoke, body, and sleeves between classes.

By the end of the workshop, students will have the skills and confidence to knit future top-down sweaters independently.

Prep Requirements Before Class 1:
Please complete the following before the first class:
• Purchase yarn and supplies
• Print or download the Flax pattern
• Knit a 5” x 5” stockinette gauge swatch using your larger needles
• Wash and dry your swatch if using superwash yarn
• Bring your swatch to class for gauge checking
