Fiber Content: 75% Shetland Wool, 25% Mulberry Silk

Angel Wings is a Paradise Fibers custom spinning blend of 75% red Shetland wool and 25% mulberry silk, in a warm rust red streaked with gold. It is one of two blends inspired by Fra Angelico's Renaissance fresco The Annunciation, taking its colors from the angel's glowing wings. Its companion blend, Mary's Robe, pairs Shetland with eri silk in blue.

The two fibers balance each other. Shetland is a hardy heritage breed with a soft, springy fleece that has great memory and strength. Mulberry silk adds a brilliant shine and drape. Together they spin into a yarn that glows in the light yet holds its shape, which makes it a good match for lace and for long-wearing socks.

Fiber details

  • Fiber content: 75% red Shetland wool, 25% mulberry silk
  • Color: Rust red with gold and orange streaks
  • Blend: Paradise Fibers custom blend, inspired by Fra Angelico's The Annunciation
  • Sold by: The ounce
  • Best for: Hand spinning lace, socks, shawls and accessories

How it spins

Shetland drafts easily and forgives uneven hands, and the silk adds slipperiness and shine. A short forward draw gives a smooth, lustrous yarn with good stitch definition for lace. For socks, spin a firm, well-plied yarn (a three-ply is ideal) so the Shetland's elasticity and the silk's strength both work for you. A warm finishing soak brings up the silk.

What to make with it

Lace shawls, socks, hats and mitts. Spin Angel Wings and Mary's Robe together for a two-color project straight out of the painting. Browse all Shetland wool roving, silk blends and fibers for spinning sock yarn.

Questions about Angel Wings

What is Angel Wings made of?

75% red Shetland wool and 25% mulberry silk.

Can I spin sock yarn from Angel Wings?

Yes. Shetland has good memory and strength, and silk adds durability. Spin a firm, well-plied yarn for the best wear.

What is the difference between Angel Wings and Mary's Robe?

Both are 75% Shetland wool blends inspired by the same fresco. Angel Wings uses 25% mulberry silk for a bright shine in rust and gold; Mary's Robe uses 25% eri silk, which has a softer, matte luster, in blue.

How much fiber do I need?

Plan on about 4 oz for a hat or small shawlette, 8 oz for a generous shawl or scarf, and 1½ to 2 lb for an adult sweater. Buy it all at once: this is a small-batch blend and may not be restocked.

How is it priced?

Sold by the ounce. Quantity pricing applies automatically at 4 oz, 8 oz, 1 lb, 2 lb and 5 lb, so buying for a sweater costs far less per ounce than buying a single sample.
