Frequently Asked Questions
Bobbins are generally designed for a specific wheel make and model, so the most reliable way to find the right fit is to identify your wheel's brand and model, and in some cases the version or generation, since manufacturers occasionally update designs. A bobbin that fits one wheel won't necessarily fit another, even from the same brand, so it's worth double-checking before ordering. If you're unsure, tell us your wheel's details and we'll confirm the correct bobbin for you.
Most spinners like to have at least three or four bobbins on hand, since plying typically requires spinning singles onto two or more bobbins and then plying them onto another, so you can quickly use several for a single project. Having extras also means you can keep spinning without stopping to wind off a full bobbin, which keeps your workflow smooth. If you spin often or work on multiple projects, more bobbins are almost always welcome, and they make great additions to any spinner's kit.
Standard bobbins are the everyday choice for most yarns, while jumbo bobbins are larger to accommodate bulky yarns, art yarn, and holding several plies at once, and high-speed bobbins are designed with different ratios for fine, fast spinning. Choosing the right one depends on the yarn you're making, so a laceweight spinner and an art yarn spinner will reach for very different bobbins. Matching the bobbin type to your project and wheel setup gives you the best results.
Neither is objectively better, since it comes down to preference and sometimes what your wheel is designed for. Wooden bobbins are traditional, attractive, and often favored for their feel and balance, while plastic bobbins are lightweight, durable, and can be more affordable, which makes them handy to stock in quantity. Many spinners happily mix both, so the best choice is really whatever suits your wheel, your budget, and your personal taste.
A lazy kate isn't strictly required, but it makes plying far easier and tidier, since it holds your full bobbins and lets them feed off smoothly and under tension while you ply the singles together. Without one, bobbins can roll around and tangle, which leads to uneven plying and frustration. If you plan to ply your yarn, a lazy kate is a small, worthwhile investment, and you'll find a good selection in our lazy kate collection.
