Ashford Cottolin is a 70% cotton, 30% linen weaving yarn, spun as an 8/2 and wound on a 200 gram cone of about 1,470 yards. The cotton makes it soft and easy to warp, and the linen gives the cloth crispness and makes it more absorbent than cotton alone. It's a natural fit for tea towels, table linens, placemats and light summer garments.

It weaves anywhere 8/2 cotton does, at the same sett, so you can drop it into any 8/2 cotton draft. It's also the same thickness as the cottolins sold as 16/2 and 22/2, which count the linen way, so patterns written for those work too.

This page holds Ashford's full Cottolin range: the original 800-series colors and the new 500-series, each listed with its number so a repeat order matches.

Frequently Asked Questions

A typical towel warp at 20 to 24 ends per inch and 16 to 18 inches wide uses about 330 to 430 ends. Each yard of warp therefore takes roughly 330 to 430 yards of yarn, and weft takes about as much again. One 1,470 yard cone covers about two towels in warp and weft together, so a set of four takes about three cones. Each extra color needs a cone of its own. We're happy to work it out for your draft if you call or chat with us.

Yes. Plan for it the same way you would for any cotton or linen towel. Cotton-linen cloth commonly shrinks about 10 to 15% in length and width through its first wash, so weave a sample, wash it the way you'll wash the finished piece, and measure before you size the project.

Yes. It's strong enough for warp at 18 to 24 ends per inch. Wind it onto the back beam at even tension. The linen makes it a little less elastic than cotton, so even tension matters more than it does with 8/2 cotton.

It comes off the loom crisp, which is the linen. It softens and becomes more absorbent after its first wash and keeps softening with use.

Yes. They're the same thickness and weave at the same sett, so you can put cottolin and 8/2 cotton in the same warp or use one as weft on the other.
