Learn the full process of weaving on a table loom with award-winning Montana weaver and teacher Annette Swan Schipf. Over three hands-on sessions, you’ll design and wind a warp, dress a loom, begin weaving, and learn how to remove and finish your cloth. You’ll make approximately 4–5 mug rugs and leave with step-by-step handouts you can use for future projects.
Important: This is a table loom class, not a rigid-heddle loom class. No weaving experience is necessary.

Location: Paradise Fibers, Spokane, Washington
What you will learn
- How to design a project and calculate a warp
- How to measure and wind a warp on a warping board
- How to thread and dress a table loom
- Weaving fundamentals, including warp, weft, EPI, PPI, take-up, shrinkage, and loom waste
- How to remove your weaving from the loom and finish the fabric
What you will make
You’ll weave approximately 4–5 mug rugs using a rosepath or twill structure, with extra warp for sampling and experimentation.
Materials and tools included
- Use of a table loom, bobbins, shuttles, warping boards, bobbin winder, and other weaving tools
- Detailed class handouts covering every step
Eight seats are available using our provided looms. If you own a table loom, let us know, up to two additional spaces may be available with the use of your own loom. Please do not bring a rigid-heddle loom.
What to bring
- 60-inch tape measure
- Blunt tapestry needle with an eye large enough for yarn
- Scissors labeled with your name
- Pen and paper for notes
- Optional: a notebook for your sample and handouts
- Your own table loom, if you have one
Yarn
Yarn is not included. Please purchase your yarn at Paradise Fibers, or bring suitable yarn.
- Warp: 8/4 cotton or 3/2 mercerized cotton
- Weft option 1: one skein of heavy dishcloth cotton
- Weft option 2: 1/2 yard of 45-inch-wide quilt-weight cotton for rag-style mug rugs
- Weft option 3: at least 70–80 yards of a cotton or cotton-blend DK-weight yarn or heavier

Beginner. No experience is necessary.
About the instructor
Annette Swan Schipf has been teaching weaving for nearly four decades. She began with adult education programs in Great Falls, Montana, and at Great Falls College–MSU, and has taught at yarn shops, art galleries, studios, and Montana Association of Weavers and Spinners conferences throughout the state. Her work has been shown at the C.M. Russell Museum and galleries in Montana, Washington, Boston, and beyond, and her projects and articles have appeared in more than a dozen issues of Handwoven. In 2026, she received the Montana Association of Weavers and Spinners Living Treasure Award, recognizing her craftsmanship, leadership, and contributions to fiber arts.
Annette’s passion is weaving, and she loves helping new weavers experience the joy of taking a project they created off the loom.

For Yarn, check your pattern's yardage requirements. A standard pair of socks usually takes 100g of fingering weight, while a hat takes about 100g of worsted.For Spinning Fiber, a standard 4oz braid will generally make a pair of socks or a hat.
