Details

The Gresham Wrap is an oversized blanket shawl by Michael Vloedman, from the Blue Sky Fibers Traveler Series. Seven colors of Woolstok Worsted run in textured stripes against an ivory ground, and the finished wrap is 78 in long and 14 in wide. This kit is the pattern plus the yarn in the colors shown, nine hanks in all. More than 280 knitters have logged a Gresham Wrap on Ravelry.

Woolstok is Blue Sky Fibers' two-ply worsted, 100% fine Highland wool from Peruvian Highland sheep. It's soft with crisp stitch definition, so the textured stitches in each stripe stand out.

What's in the kit

  • The Gresham Wrap pattern, printed
  • Color A, 2 hanks of Woolstok Worsted 150 g in 1303 Highland Fleece (370 yd each)
  • Colors B to H, 1 hank each of Woolstok Worsted 50 g (123 yd each) in 1320 Spring Ice, 1316 Spun Gold, 1321 Loon Lake, 1317 Midnight Sea, 1323 Ember Glow, 1311 Rusted Roof and 1315 Red Rock, in that order

That's 1,601 yd of yarn. Needles aren't included. You'll need US 8 (5 mm) needles and a tapestry needle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The pattern calls for US 8 (5 mm) needles and a tapestry needle, and neither comes in the kit. The wrap is knit flat, so straight needles work, but a 24 or 32 in circular needle worked back and forth holds the weight of the growing wrap in your lap instead of on your wrists. Knit a stockinette swatch first and aim for 19 stitches and 28 rows to 4 in.

Yes. The pattern is written for any eight shades of Woolstok Worsted, and this kit is the palette in the photos. To build your own, order the Gresham Wrap pattern on its own, two 150 g hanks of Woolstok Worsted for color A, and one 50 g hank each of seven more shades for colors B to H. Color A uses the most yarn, so pick it from the 150 g shades. Call or chat and we'll help you put the palette together.

Blue Sky Fibers rates it Advanced Beginner. It's one size, knit flat in stripes of textured stitches, so it suits a knitter with a scarf or two behind them who's ready for something bigger. At 1,601 yards of worsted it takes longer than a scarf. If you'd like to talk it through before you order, call the shop at (509) 536-7746.

No, Woolstok comes in hanks, the way Blue Sky Fibers puts it up. Wind each hank into a ball or center-pull cake before you knit. A swift and ball winder does it in a few minutes a hank, or you can loop a hank over the back of a chair and wind a ball by hand.

Hand wash it in tepid water with a mild soap, squeeze the water out gently without twisting, then shape it and dry it flat on a towel. Dry cleaning works too. Rubbing and agitation felt wool, so keep it out of the washing machine.
