Whole dried gardenia fruit (Gardenia jasminoides), also sold as cape jasmine or zhi zi. It's been a yellow dye in China and Japan for centuries, and the color comes from crocin, the same pigment that makes saffron yellow.
On wool and silk it gives a bright, warm yellow with no mordant at all. An alum mordant is optional there and helps the color hold longer in light. Cotton and linen take a softer lemon, and they do best scoured, tannined and alum mordanted first. Overdye with indigo for clear greens.
Using the pods
- Crush the pods so the seeds and pulp are open, then simmer them in water to pull the color. Strain out the pieces.
- Add wet fiber and hold the bath hot but below a boil for about an hour and a half. Leave it to cool in the bath overnight for a deeper shade.
- For a strong yellow, use about the same weight of pods as dry fiber. Use less for pale lemons.
Sold by the ounce as whole pods.
