Ten ounces in a single cake. A full hank goes on whole, with no cutting and no dividing, and comes off as a center pull cake that feeds from the middle.

It is a hand crank winder that clamps to a table, the same as a standard winder, just built to a bigger scale. Worth having if you buy 200g and 250g put ups, wind for a weaving warp, or ply your own yarn and want the finished skein back in one piece.

Setting it up

Clamp it to the table, seat the cone on the base, and fit the yarn guide onto its mount. Pull the guide out until it locks into place.

Feed the yarn through the guide, wrap it around the top of the cone, and turn the handle clockwise.

Let the yarn come off the skein with no tension on it, from a swift or a helper's hands. That is what gives you an even cake.

In the box

Winder body, cone, yarn guide, yarn guide mount, two swing arms and instructions. The gear box is covered.

Specs

  • Capacity: 10 ounces
  • Operation: hand crank
  • Cake: center pull, coreless
  • Mounting: table clamp

If you mostly wind single skeins and do not need the capacity, the Lacis Red Yarn Ball Winder II does the same job at 4 ounces in a smaller footprint.

Questions we get

Will it really take a whole 10 ounce hank? Yes, that is what the larger cone is for. Ten ounces is a 280g skein, so a 250g put up goes on with room to spare.

Can I wind a small skein on it? Yes. There is no minimum, so it handles a 50g ball as happily as a big hank.

What are the swing arms for? They hold the yarn guide out at the right distance from the cone as the cake builds.
