A hand crank winder that turns a skein or hank into a center pull cake, so the yarn feeds from the middle and the cake sits still instead of rolling across the floor while you work.

Setting it up

Drop the spindle into the geared base, line up the notches, and turn it clockwise until it seats.

Then pull the yarn guide up until it snaps and locks. That is about an inch and a half of travel, and you will feel it click.

Feed the yarn through the guide and wrap it clockwise around the coil on top of the spindle. Turn the handle. When the cake is finished, lift it straight off the spindle and pull your working end from the center.

Let the yarn come off the skein with no tension on it, from a swift or a helper's hands. That is what gives you an even cake.

In the box

Winder body with integral clamp, spindle, yarn guide and instructions. The gear box is covered. Spare spindles are sold separately if you would rather wind several cakes before you settle in.

Specs

  • Capacity: 4 ounces
  • Clamp: fits surfaces up to 1 1/2 In thick
  • Operation: hand crank
  • Cake: center pull, coreless

Four ounces covers a standard single skein of sock, sport or worsted yarn. If you buy bigger hanks and would rather wind them whole, the Lacis Jumbo Yarn Ball Winder takes a full 10 ounces in one pass.

Questions we get

Do I need a swift? It makes winding easier and gives a neater cake, but a second pair of hands or a chair back will do.

What is a coreless cake? The yarn winds around the spindle and comes off as a self supporting cake with a hollow middle. Nothing stays inside it, and you knit from the center out.

Can I wind two skeins onto one cake? Up to the 4 ounce capacity, yes. Join them as you wind.
