Brown is a working color

Brown is the color of a lot of the sweaters, hats, and mittens that actually get worn every day. Light browns like camel and tan pair with almost anything. Mid browns like chestnut and cinnamon look warm and rich in cables. Dark chocolate and coffee are great backgrounds for colorwork and hide wear well.

Heathered browns are worth a look. They are spun from fibers of slightly different shades, which gives the fabric depth and makes plain stockinette look more interesting.

Frequently Asked Questions

A heathered mid or dark brown in a durable wool, like Cascade 220 Chocolate Heather or Lamb's Pride Brown Heather. Heathers look rich in plain stockinette and hide pilling and wear.

Some yarn lines include undyed shades spun from naturally colored fleece. Look for words like natural or undyed in the product description. Since there is no dye to lose, those shades will not fade.

Cream, rust, mustard, and deep green are classic pairings. For a more modern look, pair camel or tan with soft pink or light blue.

Many browns have a red or orange base, like chestnut, cinnamon, and rust brown. The colorway name is a good hint, and the swatch photo shows the undertone.
