Details

The Ashford Wild Drum Carder is a compact 4 3/4 in carder built for art yarn. Its long 72 point teeth hold fabric strips, ribbon, feathers, noils, cocoons, paper and locks alongside your fiber, so you can card textured batts up to 1 1/2 oz. It also cards washed fleece and sliver, and its hand hold makes it easy to carry. It arrives assembled and lacquered. You fit the handle, the drive band, the two doffer eyes and the clamps, and it's ready to card.

Lay a thin layer of sliver on the feed tray, scatter your add-ins on top and cover them with another thin layer, which Ashford calls a sliver sandwich. The packer brush presses it all into the large drum's teeth, and the batt comes off with the add-ins locked in.

Spares and add-ons

Spares are the same parts that come in the box. We keep spares of its drive band, awl and cleaning brush, and of the clamps. For spinning straight off the carder, add the Ashford Diz Stick to pull each batt off as one long, ready-to-spin sliver.

For everyday fleece and blending, the 8 in Drum Carder carries Fine 72 or Superfine 120 cloth and two ratios. For big batts on a big project, the Wide Drum Carder cards on a 12 1/2 in drum. For carding in volume without cranking, the e-Carder 30 runs on two motors with a foot switch.

When something does need a person, our wheel tech services Ashford drum carders here in Spokane, we ship their parts anywhere, and Ashford's 12 month guarantee on manufacturing faults runs through us as your dealer. For anything else, call or chat with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fiber plus short pieces of fabric, ribbon, feathers, noils, silk cocoons, paper and locks. Lay down a thin layer of sliver, scatter the add-ins on top and cover them with another thin layer, then let the packer brush press it into the teeth. Keep everything between the guide pegs on the feed tray so nothing wraps around the shafts.

Yes, lightly. Ashford recommends washing fleece before it goes on the Wild, because grease and dirt clog the card cloth. Flick the tips of each lock open, pull the lock apart sideways and feed a little at a time.

Ashford's video on carding with the Wild is in the photos above. Jo Reeve's Ashford Book of Carding covers drum carding, color blending and four projects. If your first batt isn't coming out right, call or chat with us and we'll help you sort it out.

Put a drop of Ashford oil on the bearings now and then, and take the drive band off when you're done carding so it doesn't stretch.
