The Great American Kid's Afghan collects twelve squares from twelve designers, each working to the same brief. Make something a kid actually wants on their own bed. The colors are bright, the scale is kid-sized, and the designers are moms and grandmothers who've watched what children pick up and drag around the house.
You knit the blocks one at a time and seam them at the end, so it stays portable the whole way through. You can also repeat a square you love, leave out one you don't, and size the finished piece to the bed you actually have.
The knitting runs easy to intermediate. Cables, entrelac, Fair Isle and intarsia all turn up across the twelve, each with illustrated technique pages. A square is small enough that a first go at intarsia costs you an evening rather than a sweater's worth of yarn.

A standard pair of socks usually takes 100g of fingering weight, while a hat takes about 100g of worsted.For Spinning Fiber, a standard 4oz braid will generally make a pair of socks or a hat.
