A tensioned three-bobbin lazy kate for plying, with rods in both sizes so it holds EEW bobbins without play.

Both rod sizes

An EEW bobbin bores 3/8 in, because that's the inner diameter of the bearing it rides on. Most kates use a 1/4 in rod. The EEW kate ships three rods in each size, so it takes EEW bobbins on the large rods and other brands' bobbins on the small ones.

Three bases that come apart

Each bobbin sits on its own base, and the bases clip together with magnets and stack for storage. The rods unscrew. Open a base and you can drop weight inside for heavy full bobbins, and the magnets still hold once it's loaded.

An elastic band runs into the slot at the back, around the bobbin's groove and down into the front slot. That's the brake, and it stops a bobbin of fresh singles over-running.

Three yarn spikes slide over the large rods for centre-pull cakes, so you can ply from cakes when you have more singles than bobbins, or feed a cake while you knit.

In the box

Three bases, three magnetic bottom covers, three 9.5 mm rods, three 6.3 mm rods, three yarn spikes, three elastic tension bands and three O-ring bobbin stoppers. Small parts store inside a base.

Questions we get

How many bobbins do I need for a three-ply?

Four. Three singles plus the empty bobbin you're plying onto, and the empty one counts.

Will it hold a long bobbin from another wheel?

The small rods take most standard bobbins. A very long one can overhang, and Dreaming Robots publishes a free printable adapter that takes a knitting needle as the rod for those, so anything you own can be mounted.
