The Ashford Quill Spindle (QS) takes the place of your flyer for quill spinning, where you spin off the point of a bare steel spindle. Yarn of any thickness comes off the tip and winds onto the spindle itself, so there's no bobbin to buy, and it's handy for winding bobbins too.

Fits Traditional made after 1975, Traveller single or double drive, Traveller 3, the Elizabeth
Drive Single or double drive, with pulleys at both ends
Ratios on a Traditional 13.5, 17.5 and 21.5:1

It swaps in for your Standard Single Drive Flyer or Double Drive Flyer, and the flyer goes back on when you want to spin onto a bobbin again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Traditional wheels made after 1975, the Traveller in single or double drive, including the Traveller 3, and the Elizabeth. It has pulleys at both ends, so it runs on single and double drive wheels.

Tie a leader to the spindle, hold the yarn at about 45 degrees to the spindle so it runs off the point, and draft with a long draw. After 3 to 4 feet, turn the wheel back half a turn, hold the yarn square to the spindle and treadle forward to wind it onto the middle.

The finer the fiber, the faster you want the spindle to turn, so use a smaller pulley for fine fiber and a larger one for thicker yarn.

The point is sharp, so take the spindle off the wheel after you spin or push a cork firmly onto the point.
