The Standard Slow whorl gives the Kromski Polonaise its 8 and 12:1 ratios, the slower pair of the wheel's four. Lower ratios put less twist into each treadle and leave more time to draft, which suits thicker yarn.

The larger groove gives the slower 8:1, and the smaller groove gives the faster 12:1.
Yarn that overtwists and won't wind on usually means the ratio is too high for that yarn, so move to the larger groove or a slower whorl. Yarn that pulls apart usually means the ratio is too low, so go faster.
