The Ashford Traveller 3 is an upright castle wheel with a double treadle and the flyer centered high above the base. It's single drive with scotch tension, so one knob sets how firmly the yarn winds on, and you can adjust it while you treadle. It's a compact home wheel rather than a folding one. If you need a wheel that packs into a bag for classes and travel, that's the Joy 2.
Natural or lacquered
Same wheel either way, and both arrive flat-packed. Lacquered is sealed at the factory. Natural is raw silver beech with sandpaper included, to finish with Ashford Finishing Wax before you assemble it.

- The wheel, flat-packed. Plan on about two hours for your first wheel, or 30 minutes to an hour if you've built one before.
- Three Sliding Hook Flyer Bobbins
- A built-in lazy kate, two pins at the front of the base, so you can ply two bobbins onto the third

Spare bobbins and jumbo flyers
Its sliding hook flyer takes the single drive Sliding Hook Flyer Bobbin, and spares are the same bobbin.
For bulkier yarn, two jumbo flyers fit this wheel, and both take single drive Jumbo Bobbins, which sit on the built-in kate too. The Sliding Hook Jumbo Flyer has the same squeeze-and-slide guides as your stock flyer, and the Basic Jumbo Flyer Kit is a non-sliding flyer with fixed hooks.
For a lower-priced wheel with the same bobbin, three ratios to 9.5:1 and treadles that fold, the Kiwi 3.

No. The Traveller 3 is single drive only, and a double drive bobbin has a drive whorl where a single drive wheel needs a brake groove, so buy single drive bobbins.
Yes. The Sliding Hook Jumbo Flyer and the Basic Jumbo Flyer Kit both fit, and each comes with a jumbo flyer bearing that replaces your wheel's front bearing. The built-in kate holds jumbo bobbins too.
Both are single drive, scotch tension wheels that take the same 130g Sliding Hook Flyer Bobbin. The Traveller 3 is an upright castle wheel with four ratios up to 14:1 and a 31 3/4 in orifice height, and the Kiwi 3 has three ratios up to 9.5:1, a 27 1/4 in orifice height and treadles that fold.
Its flyer sits comfortably from a low-set chair. Sit in the chair you'd spin in, note where your hands rest, and compare that with the 31 3/4 in orifice height.
The flyer's front and rear bearings want a drop most often, and the bobbin rod and conrod bearings take one now and then. The sealed ball bearings in the drive wheel and conrod don't need oil.
