Details

The Ashford Traditional has been a favorite for over 90 years, a Saxony-style wheel with a horizontal flyer, built to last. It comes single drive or double drive, natural or lacquered, and every option includes a lazy kate and four bobbins. A double drive can also be run as single drive, so it's the flexible pick if you're not sure which to choose.

Spare bobbins and upgrade flyers

The single drive wheel ships with the Standard Flyer, the double drive with the Double Drive Flyer, and both take the Standard Bobbin in your drive. Spares are the same bobbin.

For the same Saxony form with a 30 in wheel and faster double drive ratios, the Elizabeth 30. For a lower-priced single drive wheel with folding treadles, the Kiwi 3.

When something does need a person, our wheel tech services Ashford wheels here in Spokane, we keep its bobbins, and Ashford's 12 month guarantee on manufacturing faults runs through us as your dealer. For anything else, call or chat with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Single drive with scotch tension sets the drive band and the brake separately, so it's the easier one to learn on. Double drive has one adjustment and a narrower sweet spot, but once it's set, its lighter pull breaks a fine single far less often.

A double drive bobbin has a drive whorl, a small grooved pulley on one end, and a single drive bobbin has a brake groove there instead. Buy the one that matches the flyer on your wheel.

The Standard Flyer and the Quill Spindle fit Traditionals made after 1975, and Ashford's Traditional timeline will date your wheel. For anything older, send us a photo and we'll tell you what fits.

Yes, with a jumbo flyer. The Sliding Hook Jumbo Flyer comes in single or double drive and the Basic Jumbo Flyer Kit fits the single drive wheel, and each comes with a jumbo flyer bearing for the front of the wheel.

A drop of spinning wheel oil on the flyer and bobbin bearings and the conrod joint keeps it easy to treadle. Sealed ball bearings, on every Ashford wheel since 2008, don't need oil.
